This Advanced Level training, with a specific focus on child and youth suicide risk management and mental health issues, will provide in-depth information on a range of topics specific to child and youth suicide intervention.

This workshop includes training on the use of an interview process tailored for use with young people. This assessment and intervention process includes an evidence-based process for determining level of risk and the subsequent level of intervention required. It also helps determine the need for, and how to plan and carry out a referral for further evaluation and or treatment. 

This workshop will cover:

  • Suicide contagion
  • Self-harm and suicidal behaviours
  • Relationship of mental illness to suicide in children and adolescents
  • Suicide risk assessment interviews for youth
  • How to talk with young people about suicide
  • How to determine immediate risk for suicide
  • Evidence-based treatment options and outcomes for children and adolescents with depression and anxiety

Dr Louisa Walker

Louisa, along with her husband Grant, is a Director of Walker Psychology and Consulting Ltd. 

Louisa received her Doctorate in psychology from the University of Idaho with a research emphasis on both cross-cultural and biological psychology. She has 25 years of clinical experience working extensively with GPs and specialists in efforts to build innovative treatment models integrating psychological services into general practice medicine. She developed a Department of Behavioural Health for a regional US medical clinic and has worked with primary mental health care projects in New Zealand since 2002.

Since moving to New Zealand Louisa has worked in private practice, was a consultant to the Hawke's Bay DHB acute mental health service, and has worked with several PHOs in ongoing efforts to further develop strategies to improve mental health treatment in primary care.
Louisa served as the Clinical Manager for a Ministry of Health funded suicide bereavement service delivered by Clinical Advisory Services Aotearoa (CASA).  She has worked in the areas of suicide prevention and postvention both in the US and New Zealand.  She has worked with the NZ Coroner’s office developing psychological autopsy services investigating deaths by suicide. Louisa currently consults with a wide variety of organisations regarding suicide prevention and has been instrumental in the development of both online and face to face suicide prevention training programmes in New Zealand.

Registration process

Payment online is by Debit or Credit Card: VISA, Mastercard or American Express only and there are 3 easy steps to complete the online booking process.

Our registration platform is hosted by Lil Regie, our NZ based booking agent. Upon completing your registration by hitting the blue 'Confirm Booking' button, you will receive an automated email confirming the booking and amount paid by credit card. A GST Tax Invoice showing your payment in full will also be emailed to you.

We work hard to ensure that all workshops are cost effective by automating our systems. If you require an invoice (rather than paying by debit or credit card) there will be a $25.00 inc GST surcharge for this, and you will need to supply:

  • The full name and postal address required to appear on the invoice.

  • The contact name and email of the person(s) responsible for authorising this expense and approving payment.

  • Any purchase order references required on vendor invoices.

What happens if you have to cancel?

We know that sometimes your plans can change for many different reasons. Should you be unable to attend, a substitute delegate is welcome to attend at no extra cost. If a substitute delegate is not available and you need to cancel your registration, please be aware of the following:

Up to 7 days prior to the event you will be provided a refund of your registration cost, less a $20.00 inc GST per attendee service charge.
If you cancel within 7 days of the event, you are not eligible to receive a refund. Please note: should your registration not be paid by the time of the event, you are still liable to make the payment. Unpaid accounts may be passed over to our debt collection agency and additional costs may be incurred.
All cancellations must be received in writing via email.
Training is cancellable by GROW with 3 days’ notice if a minimum number of attendees is not met and full refunds will be provided.
