Leading in a Changing Climate: Community Climate Action

90 minute Online Workshop

Wednesday 14 September, 9.00am – 10.30am

How will your organisation respond to climate change?

In this workshop Silvia Purdie and Kena Duignan outline a collaborative Treaty-based approach to environmental responsibility in community agencies.  This training is for anyone interested in promoting sustainability within your organisation, and especially for those with goverance responsibility.

Silvia will discuss the kaupapa of Climate Action for Community Organisations: A Long Story, Courage, Creativity, Participation, Protection and Partnership.

And also 10 steps for action:

  • Forge vision
  • Form a team
  • Reduce waste
  • Identify climate change risks
  • Report on carbon emissions
  • Prepare for disaster
  • Care for natural places
  • Integrate an environmental lens into your every-day
  • Promote climate-friendly policies
  • Move towards carbon zero

Feedback from previous seminar paricipants: “Inspirational and gets you thinking to take action”, “good presentation; practical; connected well with participants”.

The interactive workshop will enable participants to:

  • form an effective ‘Taiao’ or ‘Green’ team
  • reduce your organisation’s carbon and waste footprint
  • energise people with creative ways to engage
  • assess and address climate change risks
  • work in partnership to support Tikanga Māori values in relation to te Taiao
  • network and share issues for your organisation.

Our Workshop Speakers

Silvia Purdie leads Place Consultancy, offering training, resources and consultancy to organisations in the community sector on environmental sustainability. www.place.net.nz

She brings a particular interest in mental health, with a private practice in counselling and professional supervision based in Rolleston. Silvia is also an ordained minister and author of Awhi Mai Awhi Atu: Women in Creation Care, and Moving On: Grief in Ministry Transition.

Kena Duignan is the Community Innovation Lead at Wesley Community Action. She is a Pākehā woman who lives in her hometown of Te Whanganui a Tara with her partner, two small children and wider whānau. The focus of her mahi is on helping to shift the stubborn systems that aren’t working for us anymore – by supporting responses that are crafted from the beginning by those most affected, and who are too often cut off from being able to contribute all the awesome things they have to offer.
