Addressing the Elephant in the Room: Developing Confidence in
Advanced Care Planning

Tuesday 24 February 2026
9am - 12.30pm
Online via Zoom

For those supporting individuals with complex health needs and their whānau, some of the hardest conversations are those about planning for the future, and the uncertainty it brings. Too often these conversations happen late, in moments of crisis, or are left to health professionals towards the end of life.

When they begin earlier as holistic conversations about goals, choices, and values, they can be transformative. Early conversations create clarity, reduce anxiety, and ensure that the voice, values, and needs of the individual and whānau are heard and included. These conversations do not need to be limited to health settings. They can also be delivered by those who have developed a relationship of trust, whether in education, counselling, allied health, community, or care environments.

This half-day workshop helps you start these conversations earlier, with confidence and care.  It offers practical tools, language, and strategies to create safe spaces, foster trust, and support decision-making.  Participants will leave with approaches they can use immediately to guide conversations that matter most, while strengthening both their practice and their own professional sustainability.

Learning Outcomes

You will learn how to:

·         Use open, values-based questions to uncover what matters most

·         Create supportive environments for individuals and whānau

·         Manage emotional responses and reduce uncertainty in challenging conversations

·         Strengthen your practice by promoting confidence, resilience, and sustainability

Who Should Attend?

Suitable for health professionals, allied health, psychologists, counsellors, SENCOs, educators, and community-based workers.
