A five-stage professional development series building practical confidence in Te Tiriti o Waitangi

Organisations across Aotearoa are increasingly seeking to strengthen how they uphold Te Tiriti o Waitangi in their mahi. While the commitment is often there, knowing what this means in practice — for individuals, teams and governance — can be challenging.

This five-stage webinar series provides a progressive pathway for building understanding, confidence and practical capability in Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Whether you are engaging with Te Tiriti for the first time or looking to deepen capability developed through previous learning, each stage builds on the last to support meaningful application in your own workplace.

Overall Learning Outcomes

By the end of the full series, participants will be able to:

  • Speak with basic confidence about te ao Māori concepts and how they shape a Māori worldview.

  • Explain the key phases of Aotearoa New Zealand's colonial history and why that history still matters to present-day practice.

  • Have the basis or foundations to be positively inquisitive of Te Tiriti and what it may mean for them.

  • Identify the specific Te Tiriti responsibilities that sit with their own role, and with their organisation more broadly.

  • Describe what genuine Te Tiriti leadership looks like in practice, and take at least one concrete leadership action back into their own context.

Please note: this online training will not be recorded.

Stage 1 — Understanding Te Ao Māori · 2 hours

A foundational worldview session, run first so that every later stage builds on shared ground rather than assuming prior knowledge. Suited equally to participants completely new to this material and to those wanting to revisit the fundamentals.

Key content:

  • Core concepts: whakapapa, whanaungatanga, mana, tikanga, and an introduction to te reo Māori.

  • Māori ways of knowing and being, set alongside (not against) Western institutional frameworks.

  • Why grounding in worldview needs to come before history and Te Tiriti content, not after it.

  • Space for participants to locate their own starting point for further learning.

Participants will leave able to:

  • Describe several core te ao Māori concepts in their own words.

  • Recognise how a worldview shapes the way relationships and decisions are approached.

  • Identify their own gaps and starting point heading into the rest of the series.

Stage 2 — The History of Colonisation in Aotearoa New Zealand · 2 hours

Purpose
A shared factual grounding in New Zealand's colonial history, from pre-Treaty contact through to the Waitangi Tribunal and settlement process — the context every later conversation about Te Tiriti responsibilities depends on.

Key content

  • Aotearoa before 1840, and the lead-up to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

  • The signing of Te Tiriti, and an introduction to the “two texts”.

  • Breaches through the 19th and 20th centuries: land confiscation, language suppression, urbanisation.

  • The Waitangi Tribunal and the settlement process, and how it connects to today's organisations.

Participants will leave able to:

  • Explain the key phases of New Zealand's colonial history in sequence.

  • Connect historical events to present-day organisational and social contexts.

  • Engage with this history without defensiveness, and hold space for others to do the same.

Stage 3 — Te Tiriti o Waitangi · 2 hours

Purpose

Interrogating and debunking some commonly held misconceptions about Te Tiriti. Encouraging audiences to become inquisitive about what they know and what’s missing.

Key content

  • Te Tiriti Māori text alongside the English-language Treaty text, and where they diverge.

  • The principles as they have developed: partnership, participation, active protection, equity.

  • How these principles translate from legal and policy language into everyday practice.

  • Common misunderstandings, and where they tend to come from.

Participants will leave able to:

  • Distinguish Te Tiriti from “the Treaty” and explain why the distinction matters.

  • Articulate the principles and give a practical example of each.

  • Locate roughly where their own organisation's obligations sit.

Stage 4 — Individual and Organisational Responsibilities to the Te Tiriti Partnership · 2 hours

Purpose

The bridge from concept to practice: what a genuine Te Tiriti partnership actually requires of an individual in their role, and of an organisation in its strategy, systems, and culture.

Key content

  • Individual-level responsibilities: how a role interacts with tangata whenua, community, and colleagues.

  • Organisational-level responsibilities: strategy, policy, governance, employment practice, procurement, and community engagement.

  • Practical ways to identify and keep track of responsibilities, so they don't rely on one person's memory.

  • Common barriers to implementation, and realistic ways through them.

Participants will leave able to:

  • Identify the specific responsibilities that sit with their own role.

  • Describe what organisational Te Tiriti practice looks like beyond a policy statement.

  • Leave with one practical starting point for action at a personal or team level.

Stage 5 — Showing Te Tiriti Leadership · 2 hours

Purpose

The capstone session: moving from compliance to leadership, and addressing how anyone — regardless of title, seniority, or formal authority — can model and advocate for Te Tiriti responsiveness.

Key content

  • What Te Tiriti leadership looks like in practice, as distinct from symbolic gestures.

  • Leading through influence where there is no positional authority to lead with.

  • Having the harder conversations and sustaining momentum through resistance or fatigue.

  • Embedding practice so it outlasts any one leader, policy cycle, or change of government.

Participants will leave able to:

  • Describe what Te Tiriti leadership looks like in their own context.

  • Identify one leadership action they will take in the next quarter.

  • Feel equipped

Who Should Attend?

  • Individuals beginning their Te Tiriti learning journey

  • Staff wanting to build on existing knowledge

  • People in leadership or management roles

  • Teams seeking a shared understanding and approach

  • Governance members wanting to strengthen their Te Tiriti capability

Don't miss this opportunity to deepen your understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and it's practical, real-life application within your organisation.

Lisa Hopa is the interim Chief Executive Officer of Rangitāne o Tamaki nui-ā-Rua Charitable Trust, and Kaiarataki (co-lead) of Hononga Consulting alongside Scott Summerfield.

For five years, Lisa has worked in support and capability facilitation across a range of sectors, including defence, central government, NGOs, and not-for-profits. Her work spans policy advice, strategy design and implementation, capability and engagement frameworks, and training development and delivery. Though she considers this a relatively short period of dedicated mahi, she has lived the realities of what this space needs her entire life.

Sharing her expertise is Lisa's passion. Giving all people the space to grow their understanding is fundamentally what her training is about — and what she enjoys enabling.

Through Hononga Consulting, Lisa works with organisations and individuals to uplift Te Tiriti o Waitangi capability, guiding people from a foundational understanding of Te Ao Māori and the history of colonisation in Aotearoa, through to practical workplace application, organisational responsibility, and Te Tiriti leadership.

She is currently working on her Doctor of Philosophy, focusing on decolonising defence in New Zealand, and in her spare time she loves spending time with friends and family and travelling to new and exciting destinations.
